MULTIMEDIA AND MULTIMODAL

Multimedia and multimodal are very different, multimodal describes the reasoning behind our choice of combining particular communication modes in order to best explain an idea to an audience. Whereas multimedia focuses on the technology to create captivating illusions for viewers. They are both “especially interesting terms to examine together because they come from different social, technological, and historical contexts and their definitions are technically different, yet they are often understood similarly”.( s Cynthia L. Selfe (2007).Multimedia tools are used in education within today’s society because it engages children and provides valuable learning opportunities and empowers students to create and design instead of captivating representations created by others. Learning4kids is an example of a multimedia tool that is being used to educate children, this tool is a place where parents, educators “create an online source where they can find a useful box of activities and play ideas to do with their children that will also help promote learning and development.” Here’s a link to the website http://www.learning4kids.net/where-to-start/. Children are exposed to and use range of technologies and a new communication process in their home, school and community environment. In education teachers should encompass new ways of communication and interpretation involving multimodal and using multimedia tools as it will enhance children’s learning and development.

  1. As technology is developing - Do you recommend that practitioners should adjust their teaching pedagogy to keep up to date with the 21st century? I understand that educators need to incorporate multimodal and multimedia learning within the classroom to ensure students are fully engaged (Bezemer et al, 2016). Although, practitioners tend to have a lack of knowledge and are unaware of how to support students when using new technology (Ioannou et al, 2016).

  2. I agree that teachers should use technology to support their pedagogical learning method as this enables them to compose new ways of delivering information (Twiner et al, 2010). However, I disagree that not all multimedia and multimodal technology provides children with valuable educational opportunities. The Foundation Phase 2010 which is the legal-framework in Wales emphasises play opportunities in outdoor environments to allow children to learn through their own personal experience (Curriculum for Wales, 2015). This is not aided or supported by technology.

  3. I think practioners should regulate their teaching pedagogy to keep up with today’s society to enhance children’s learning and their ways of educating children. Technology is emerging and in today’s generation of young children have more access to technology than previous generation (Eugene et Al 2004). I agree that not all technology enhances children’s learning, however children are provided iPad’s to learn the alphabets by watching a video or playing a game. Educators may use cards to teach children the alphabetic. With technology or without technology educators can integrate multimedia and multimodal learning in the classroom to teach children and improve their learning.
